Strange Horizons Review : 2009 Edition

January 4, 2010

Strange Horizons have put up their traditional yearly round up of what’s been best in the worlds of science fiction and fantasy.  My entry comes about two-thirds of the way down.

It would appear that there’s a lot of love in the room for China Mieville’s The City and The City and Kim Whitfield’s In Great Waters, neither of which, I must admit, are books I’m particularly interested in.  My interest in Mieville broke with his short fiction collection and his foray into Young Adult writing and Whitfield’s book is a fantasy novel about mermaids, albeit a fantasy novel about mermaids that is supposed to be incredibly well written.

If you think of In Great Waters as a book about first contact told from the point of view of the alien, does that help?

I think you may have mentioned something like that to me before :-) In all honesty, I think it will depend upon my mood when I take a look at it, which I probably will once it comes out in paperback.
